Program Feature: Intelligent Systems Program

Five years after its 30th anniversary celebration, the Intelligent Systems Program continues to grow as a unique center for the research and study of artificial intelligence.

The Intelligent Systems Program, or ISP, is a graduate level program within the School of Computing and Information. Headed by Director Peter Brusilovsky, ISP offers two degree programs in Intelligent Systems: the Master of Science in Intelligent Systems and the Doctor of Philosophy in Intelligent Systems.

The program, which was formed in the 1980s, has consistently been characterized by its multidisciplinary and application-based approach.

“[The creation of the program] brought faculty from really different places, like psychology, law, computer science, and information science,” said Brusilovsky about the program’s interdisciplinary beginnings. “A lot of faculty also came from the health-related field, which turned out to be a really important collaboration.”

Recent presentations in the “ISP AI Forum” featuring titles such as “Extracting Physical Rehabilitation Exercise Information from Clinical Notes,” “Toward Automatically Identifying Legally Relevant Factors,” and “Designing Network Interventions with Costly and Private Data” are just a few examples of the multidisciplinary focus that drives the ongoing research of the ISP program.

Brusilovsky emphasized that because ISP faculty predominantly come from fields where AI is used, such as medicine and education, “the program primarily focuses on the application of AI.”
