Collaboration with others is a key factor in a productive and positive workplace, and alumna Nikki Moberly (SCI ’85, ’87G), discussed this and effective delegation on Oct. 15 in her talk, “Doing Delegation Better.” Moberly completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in information science at SCI and worked as a business leader and executive in the IT, software, and services industry for 37 years. She now works as a coach, focusing on leadership development, business outcomes, and individual accountability.
For leaders across businesses and organizations, it is important to delegate tasks for higher productivity. Moberly explained that task delegation helps leaders scale their reach, focus on strategy and alignment, grow their teams’ skills and expertise, and develop their team’s future leadership. Task delegation is not just about getting things done efficiently, but also about working together.
“Task delegation is about getting results through and with others – isn’t that really the essence of leadership?” said Moberly. “Working through and with others is the real test of leadership. We, as leaders, already know we can do it ourselves, but building capability together is really important.”
To delegate effectively, leaders must keep some key points in mind: knowing their individual team members’ skills and experience, having the intention to get things done through and with others, and reframing their role and the value they bring.
“Leaders can both bring value and delegate,” said Moberly. “Delegating as a leader brings a lot of value to your team and organization.”
In the long-term, delegation not only boosts productivity, but it also fosters positive connection, collaboration, and teamwork among employees across organizations.
“Delegating is an investment in the future,” said Moberly. “Having that intention to delegate differently is a starting point for leaders.”
Throughout her career, Moberly has helped people develop their careers, rise in the ranks to leadership positions, and cope with life challenges both in and out of the workplace. SCI alumni like Moberly are using their expertise to help others across the country, putting their experiences at SCI to use to make meaningful impacts across sectors.
