SCI Community Saddened by the Passing of Retired IS Professor Donald L. Shirey

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Dr. Donald L. Shirey, who was an associate professor of Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Shirey earned a Master’s and Doctorate in Information Science at Pitt in 1970, later becoming an associate professor in the School of Information Sciences until his retirement in 1996. During his time at Pitt, he also served as the Associate Chair for Information Sciences and contributed to numerous books, including "Information Science and Action: System Design Volume II."

"He was the most even-headed faculty our department has ever had," Michael Lewis, a professor in the Department of Informatics and Networked Systems, said. "A real peace maker and great administrator."

 Outside of Pitt, Dr. Shirey volunteered for Freeport Meals on Wheels for 25 years, serving as a treasurer and deliverer for the organization.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 6 at Fox Funeral Home, Inc. from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the Buffalo Presbyterian Church.
