Dr. Xulong Tang receives NSF grant

Dr. Xulong Tang, an assistant professor with the Department of Computer Science, received a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). His research focuses on deep neural networks (DNNs), a machine-learning technique, and how to train DNNs using fewer computing resources and less time.

Dr. Morgan Frank awarded grant from the Heinz Endowments

Dr. Morgan Frank, an assistant professor in the Department of Informatics and Networked Systems, has received a $194K grant from The Heinz Endowments along with Michael Aklin, an associate professor in the Department of Political Science, for a project to study the barriers fossil fuel workers may encounter when entering green industry jobs.

Alumna Debra D. King Named Chair of SCI Board of Visitors

Debra D. King (A&S ’83; SCI ’85) was appointed by Dean Bruce Childers to serve as Chair of the School of Computing and Information (SCI) Board of Visitors. Final approval and formal appointment to serve was issued through the Office of the Chancellor. The SCI BoV consists of sixteen members, 7 Pitt alumni (6 from SCI) representing leaders with extensive experience in industry and all aspects of academia.

Dr. Konstantinos Pelechrinis Co-PI to $1.1 million NSF grant project

Dr. Konstantinos Pelechrinis, associate professor with the Department of Informatics and Networked Systems, is a Co-Principal Investigator of "Building a sustainable national network for developing and disseminating Sports Content for Outreach, Research, and Education in data science”. This project recently received a $1.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation. 

SCI Students Receive Scholarships to Attend WiCyS Conference

On March 17-19, three students from theSchool of Computing and Information's Department of Informatics and Networked Systems attended the annual Women in Cybersecurity, or WiCyS, conference in Cleveland, OH. Maryam Aldairi, Krity Kharbanda, and Aren Alyahya all received scholarships to attend the conference.

Dr. Diane Litman and collaborators awarded new NSF grant

Dr. Diane Litman, faculty member with the Department of Computer Science, has recently been awarded a new National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to support her work with the Learning Research & Development Center (LRDC).

Professor Bruce Childers named new SCI dean

Following an extensive national search, Professor Bruce Childers has been named dean of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Computing and Information (SCI), effective May 1. He has served as interim dean of the school since 2020 when founding dean Paul Cohen announced his intent to step down and return to the faculty.

Dr. Peter Brusilovsky receives NIH grant for aphasia project

Dr. Peter Brusilovsky, faculty member with the Department of Informatics and Networked Systems, recently received a National Institutes of Health grant for an aphasia rehabilitation project.

ADDM Graduate Certificate program celebrates third year of operation

Dr. Panos Chrysanthis selected as IEEE Distinguished Contributor

Dr. Panos Chrysanthis, faculty member with the Department of Computer Science, was recently selected as part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society's inaugural 2021 Class of Distinguished Contributors. The IEEE CS Distinguished Contributor Recognition Program began in 2021 and recognizes members for their technical contributions to the society and their professions at large. 

Pitt Cyber Accelerator Grants Fund SCI Faculty Projects

This year, three faculty members of the School of Computing and Information (SCI) received funding from the Pitt Cyber Accelerator Grants.

The Cyber Accelerator Grants are distributed to innovative projects that progress Pitt Cyber's mission to engage the University in issues regarding networks, data, and algorithms within the relevant fields of law, policy, and technology. The grants provide funding for areas of interest including research and multidisciplinary work.

Pitt Cyber awarded the grants to five projects, three of which include SCI faculty members.

Two SCI Community Members Receive Distinguished Membership in Professional Organizations

Recently, two members of the School of Computing and Information (SCI) community received elevated roles in their professional organizations. 

Nine SCI Faculty Receive Pitt Momentum Funds

This year, five projects by nine faculty members of the School of Computing and Information (SCI) received Momentum Funds from the Pitt Office of Research. The Momentum Funds consist of three tiers of grants designed to support projects rooted in scholarship, multidisciplinary work, and research by Pitt faculty members. Awardees of the 32 total funded projects will be celebrated at the Fueling the Future Funding Showcase in September 2022.
