Pitt Seed Grants Fund SCI Faculty Projects

This year, six SCI faculty members received Pitt Seed Grants in order to fund various projects.

Rosta Farzan Honored for Outstanding Work

School of Computing and Information faculty member and Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Rosta Farzan has been awarded the Chancellor's Distinguished Public Service award. 

The Distinguished Public Service award is annually given by the Chancellor to honor outstanding public service contributions by University of Pittsburgh faculty members.

SCI Fundraising Reaches New Highs During 2022 Pitt Day of Giving

On February 22, 2022, the University of Pittsburgh held its sixth annual Pitt Day of Giving. Through the generosity of more than 170 supporters - alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents, and friends - the School of Computing and Information (SCI) raised over $43,000 in donations. 

“The support from the SCI community is always incredible, and we’re so grateful to all our donors. Their gifts will directly support our students and help the school continue to grow,” said Interim Dean Bruce Childers.

Dr. Rob Rutenbar receives 2021 SIGDA Pioneering Achievement Award

Rob Rutenbar, Senior Vice Chancellor for Research at Pitt and Distinguished Professor at the School of Computing and Information and the Swanson School of Engineering, received the 2021 SIGDA Pioneering Achievement Award from the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Design Automation (ACM SIGDA).

Dr. Stephen Lee and Dr. Daniel Mosse receive Best Paper Runner Up at BuildSys 2021

Dr. Stephen Lee and Dr. Daniel Mossé, faculty members with the Department of Computer Science, recently received a Best Paper Runner-up award from BuildSys 2021 for their paper "Deep Reinforcement Learning for Energy-efficient Parking Video Analytics Platform". 

Dr. Daniel Mosse named Associate Dean for Professional Graduate Programs

Dr. Daniel Mossé will serve as Associate Dean for Professional Graduate Programs effective January 1, 2022. He will play a vital role in helping develop the vision for and implementation of new professional Master's and other credit-bearing graduate programs as they are created and managed within SCI and in partnership with other schools. For the past three decades, Mossé has been a professor and formerly served as Department Chair of Computer Science.

Dr. Malihe Alikhani awarded $1 million DARPA grant

Dr. Malihe Alikhani (assistant professor, Department of Computer Science) is working on designing content moderation systems for social media called the Greate Facilitators with the goal of designing agents that will actively moderate social media content to foster positive dialogue and discourage harmful behaviors such as bullying. Alikhani and collaborators Ajay Divakaran and Karan Sikka of SRI Research have received funding through the Department of Defense Civil Sanctuary program.

Dr. Xiaowei Jia awarded best paper at 2021 International Conference on Data Mining

SCI Honors Graduates in Fall 2021 Recognition Ceremony

Forty-two graduates and their families attended the School of Computing and Information Fall 2021 Recognition Ceremony on December 3 in the William Pitt Union. As the first opportunity to host an in-person graduation ceremony in two years, this was a momentous occasion for the community to come together to celebrate the accomplishments of our students. Those unable to attend in-person were able to view the ceremony remotely.

Dr. Adam Lee, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, opened the ceremony and welcomed family and friends of the graduates.

Pitt2Pitt Profile: Oliva Larson, MLIS Student

Olivia Larson has seen several corners of Pitt’s operating world — from an undecided first-year at the Pittsburgh campus, to an education major at Pitt Greensburg, and now a graduate student in the School of Computing and Information. She knows the University pretty well.

Sonia Cromp '21 awarded best paper at Educational Data Mining 2021

Sonia Cromp (BS in Computer Science, BA in Linguistics, Class of 2021) was awarded the best paper award at the Workshop for Undergraduates in Educational Data Mining and Learning Engineering at the 2021 Educational Data Mining Conference for her paper Essay Revision and Corresponding Grade Chang as Captured by Text Similarity and Revision Purposes. The paper was written in conjunction with Dr. Diane Litman (Professor, CS and LRDC.) 

Dr. Adriana Kovashka’s NSF CAREER project aims to lower the cost of AI learning

Computer Science professor Dr. Adriana Kovashka received a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award in May 2021. The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is an NSF-wide activity that offers the Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization.
