Conor McGirr (SCI ’24) on Joining the Peace Corps

SCI students are always finding ways to make a real-world impact with their skills, and Conor McGirr is one such example. A senior majoring in information science with a minor in political science, McGirr is taking SCI across the globe and volunteering with the Peace Corps to aid in STEM education in Kenya.  

CS Student Named to the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

Senior computer science Student Griffin J. Hurt has been named a 2024 Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) scholar. 

The program supports graduate students pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in NSF-supported STEM fields. About 2,000 fellowships are selected from 14,000 applicants. Hurt was one of the eight recipients from Pitt this year. Pitt also had 17 honorable mentions.

SCI, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh present ALSC 2024 Children’s Literature Lecture

Bestselling and award-winning author Rita Williams-Garcia will present her paper, “A Funny Thing About Memory.”

On March 25, PhD students had the opportunity to present their research during the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, held at 130 N. Bellefield Ave. 20 doctoral students participated in the event, a record-breaking number of 3MT participants at SCI.

Jessica Hammer Explores Transformational Gameplay at Dean’s Spotlight Series 2024

SCI Dean for DEI and Alumna to Co-Chair CSCW 2024

The School of Computing and Information (SCI)’s associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion, Rosta Farzan, and Claudia López have been named general co-chairs of the 27th Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing (CSCW) conference, one of the top Human-Computer Interaction conferences worldwide. Dr. López is a former information science doctoral student advised by Dr. Peter Brusilovsky. CSCW is set to occur in San José, Costa Rica this fall on November 9-13, 2024.
