SCI Undergraduate Students Create Winning App Idea at Pitt Tank 2024

Pitt Tank, presented by Pitt Information Technology (IT) and the Big Idea Center, provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to develop and pitch the next groundbreaking app for Pitt students. The first-place prize of Pitt Tank 2024 was awarded to Kenny Han, SCI ’25, and Krishna Naik, SCI ’25, for their lost-and-found app idea. 

CS Faculty Members Receive Mascaro Center Awards for Project to Improve Energy Efficiency On-Campus

Members of SCI’s Department of Computer Science (CS) want to improve Pitt’s energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on campus. Their project “Sustainable (Campus) Buildings through Sensing and Human-Building Interaction,” aims to do just that. 

MSIS Student Azib Zahid Receives James G. Williams Award

At the annual Spring Student Awards for the Department of Informatics and Networked Systems, Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) student Azib Zahid earned the James G. Williams Award. Named after Distinguished Professor Emeritus James G. Williams, the scholarship is awarded to outstanding MSIS students.

Ryan Shi Receives Awards for Research Combating Food Waste and Insecurity in Pittsburgh

In Pittsburgh, 1 in 5 residents experience food insecurity, and up to 40 percent of food that is produced goes to waste. Food waste and insecurity negatively harm communities and the environment, and SCI faculty member Dr. Ryan Shi, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science (CS), is reducing these harmful effects with his research project, “AI-based Volunteer Engagement for Crowdsourcing.”

MST Student Hubert Asare Receives K. Leon Montgomery Award, Dr. Fritz Froehlich Award

At the Department of Informatics and Networked Systems annual Spring Student Awards, Hubert Asare earned the K. Leon Montgomery Assistantship and the Dr. Fritz Froehlich Scholarship, awarded to outstanding students in the Master of Science in Telecommunications (MST) program. These annual awards honor students for their outstanding performance academically, professionally, and in the Pitt community.

Tim Huang’s “The Time Traveling Project” Presented at Governor’s Residence

Technology has the capability to transform the way people produce and consume art, and at SCI, Assistant Professor Tim Huang is making that happen with a Pittsburgh connection.

On March 19, Huang and fellow researcher Pat Healy, a PhD student studying information science, presented their work on The Time Traveling Project in Harrisburg at Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s residence.
