Information Science Alumna Creates Virtual and Augmented Reality Tools for Studying Nature

SCI alumna Maria Harrington has recently created technological tools to help people explore nature through virtual and augmented reality.  Her virtual reality game, called Virtual UCF Arboretum, provides users with an opportunity to explore the University of Central Florida’s arboretum, which contains 274 acres of natural habitat.  She has also created an augmented reality tool called AR Perpetual Garden App, which allows users to transform any space into an Appalachian flora garden through a smart phone or tablet.  These tools are helpful in supplementing science lessons for

SCI Faculty Member Appointed Director of the Sara Fine Institute

Dr. Eleanor Mattern, faculty member at the School of Computing and Information, was recently appointed Director of the Sara Fine Institute. In her current work, Mattern, who holds a PhD in Library and Information Sciences, is focused on open data about our communities and on building capacity for libraries to help the public to access, use, and benefit from civic data and information.

SCI Faculty Selected as Chair of Information Culture and Data Stewardship

SCI Associate Professor Mary K. Biagini was recently selected as Chair of the Department of Information Culture and Data Stewardship (ICDS).

“To lead as Chair is a welcome challenge to tackle with the ICDS faculty,” said Biagini.  “I’ve always been a learner and learning from the faculty, students, and alumni of the Department of Information Culture and Data Stewardship during the time of the pandemic is the learning experience of my professional life.”

MLIS Student Selected as Spectrum Scholar by the American Library Association
