New article in Science Magazine describes open questions about how AI is shaping art

Assistant Professor Morgan Frank (Department of Informatics and Networked Systems) collaborated with computer scientists, legal scholars, economists, designers, cultural researchers, and artists on a new Perspective article published in the prestigious Science magazine describing misconceptions and open questions about generative AI, including ChatGPT and ImageNet, and the future of art.

SCI Projects Awarded 2022-23 Pitt Momentum Funds

This year, four projects by five faculty members of the School of Computing and Information (SCI) received Momentum Funds from the Pitt Office of Research! The Momentum Funds consist of three tiers of grants designed to support projects focused on scholarship, multidisciplinary work, and research by Pitt faculty. Awardees of the 29 total projects will be celebrated at the Fueling the Future showcase in September 2023.

CS Faculty Member Presents on Experience Developing Indoor-Outdoor Path Recommendation System to Provide Inclusivity

Dr. Panos Chrysanthis, a professor in the Department of Computer Science, presented a talk on his indoor-outdoor path recommendation system, CAPRIO, at the University of Cyprus. The talk centered on the CAPRIO team’s experience developing the system to be inclusive to users from all backgrounds and how they achieved that inclusivity.

DINS Faculty Members Wins Test of Time Award for Paper at ACM SenSys 2022

Dr. Pengfei Zhou, an assistant professor in the Department of Informatics and Networked Systems, won the Test of Time Award at the 2022 ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems (SenSys) for his paper "IODetector: A Generic Service for Indoor Outdoor Detection" published ten years ago.

SCI Summer Scholars Seek to Improve Web Stability Through an Optimization of Consensus Algorithm

A recent SCI Summer Scholars project overseen by Dr. Amy Babay, Assistant Professor with the Department of Computer Science and Department of Informatics and Networked Systems, has researched the efficiency of leader election in the consensus algorithm.

DINS Faculty Members Receive NSA/NSF Grant for GenCyber@Pitt Program

Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim, a teaching assistant professor in the Department of Informatics and Networked Systems (DINS), and Dr. Balaji Palanisamy, an associate professor in DINS, received an award from the National Security Agency (NSA) and National Science Foundation (NSF) to host the GenCyber@Pitt program in Summer 2023.

Dr. Xulong Tang receives NSF grant

Dr. Xulong Tang, an assistant professor with the Department of Computer Science, received a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). His research focuses on deep neural networks (DNNs), a machine-learning technique, and how to train DNNs using fewer computing resources and less time.

Dr. Peter Brusilovsky receives NIH grant for aphasia project

Dr. Peter Brusilovsky, faculty member with the Department of Informatics and Networked Systems, recently received a National Institutes of Health grant for an aphasia rehabilitation project.

Awardees of the 32 total funded projects will be celebrated at the Fueling the Future Funding Showcase in September 2022.

Kamil Akhuseyinoglu and Peter Brusilovsky Win Best Paper at Conference

SCI PhD student Kamil Akhuseyinoglu and Professor Peter Brusilovsky recently won the Best Paper Award at the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM)'s 29th Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (UMAP). Their paper, titled "Data-Driven Modeling of Learners' Individual Differences for Predicting Engagement and Success in Online Learning," proposes a new model for exploring how individual differences relate to student performance.

Malihe Alikhani and Yu-Ru Lin Receive Pitt Cyber Accelerator Grants

SCI Assistant Professor Malihe Alikhani and Associate Professor Yu-Ru Lin were recently among the awardees for the Pitt Cyber Accelerator Grants Program (PCAG). This program provides initial funding for projects that address critical questions of networks, data, and algorithms, with a focus on the ever-changing gaps among law, policy, and technology.
