Empowering smallholder farmers in the Global South through agriculture chatbots

Governmental agricultural extension systems, which disseminate farm and market practice recommendations, are not always able to ensure all farmers receive adequate guidance. While agriculture chatbots have proven to be a powerful enabler for farmers at large scale, current chat bots struggle with low engagement.

SCI Students Help to Preserve Indigenous Cultures With VR Technology

In March 2024, students led by Dr. Dmitriy Babichenko, clinical associate professor in the Department of Informatics and Networked Systems, traveled to Ecuador to visit the isolated indigenous Waorani tribe to use VR technology to help preserve their culture.

Ryan Shi Receives Awards for Research Combating Food Waste and Insecurity in Pittsburgh

In Pittsburgh, 1 in 5 residents experience food insecurity, and up to 40 percent of food that is produced goes to waste. Food waste and insecurity negatively harm communities and the environment, and SCI faculty member Dr. Ryan Shi, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science (CS), is reducing these harmful effects with his research project, “AI-based Volunteer Engagement for Crowdsourcing.”

On March 19, Huang and fellow researcher Pat Healy, a PhD student studying information science, presented their work on The Time Traveling Project in Harrisburg at Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s residence.
