About the School of Computing and Information

As the University of Pittsburgh’s newest school, the School of Computing and Information (SCI) is a growing interdisciplinary community of faculty, staff, and students who are accustomed to progressing through change, thinking beyond boundaries, and innovating new approaches to lead our institution and nation to positive change. Since 2017, SCI has hired twenty-five faculty members and we are continuing our growth with multiple openings in the tenure stream this year.

We are fostering an equitable and inclusive community with our scholarship, education, and faculty development initiatives, including: policies to promote a healthy work-life balance; programs to meet the needs of two career couples, and a commitment to recruit, retain, and develop a diverse faculty.

SCI’s interdisciplinary research and education includes computer science, information science, and library and information science with rich connections to partners in health sciences, medicine, engineering, social sciences, humanities, business, and other areas.

Tenure-Track Positions

AI/Machine Learning/Natural Language Processing
The Department of Computer Science is seeking candidates for an Assistant Professor doing research in emerging areas at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing to create methods, theories, and practices to solve critical societal problems. Particular areas of interest involve fairness and ethics, the creation and/or use of knowledge representations, explainability, and multimodality (e.g., NLP+computer vision), but faculty whose research falls outside of those interests are also invited to apply.

Quantum Computing
The School of Computing and Information (SCI) is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor in the broad area of quantum computing systems. SCI has three departments – Computer Science, Informatics and Networked Systems, and Information Culture and Data Stewardship. SCI is interested in candidates with expertise that fit one or more of the departments and can work with the faculty in SCI in the areas of quantum software design, compilation, and optimization, quantum device architecture, quantum system design in the NISQ era and beyond, large-scale quantum simulation, and quantum cryptography systems.

We expect candidates to bridge the gap between standard and quantum computing and information in a variety of ways, such as:

  • coordinating the interaction between classical processes and quantum devices.
  • building general and robust quantum compilation software to support quantum development
  • developing approaches/protocols for architecting the quantum systems
  • efficient emulation of quantum computing and networking
  • building machine learning systems to optimize quantum computing
  • Developing quantum cryptosystems for secure multiparty and blind quantum computation

Appointment-Stream Positions

Teaching Assistant Professor - Data Science
The School of Computing and Information at the University of Pittsburgh is inviting applications for one teaching assistant professor position (in the appointment stream) with an anticipated starting date of Fall 2023. The School is looking for candidates who are eager to use pedagogical approaches and inclusive practices and have experience teaching in the broad area of data science.  This faculty member would help support the growth of the School’s existing Applied Data-Driven Methods graduate certificate, support the data science curriculum across other SCI degree programs, and contribute to the development of new professional graduate pathways involving data science.

Appointment-stream faculty are full-time faculty with long-term career advancement opportunities that mirror tenure-track faculty lines. Appointment Stream faculty are fully integrated into the operations of the School and University and are encouraged to contribute to new curricula, School governance, and the mentorship of student researchers.

Teaching Assistant Professor
The Department of Computer Science is inviting applications for three teaching assistant professor positions. The department is looking for candidates who are eager to use pedagogical approaches and inclusive practices and have experience teaching in any of the following areas: algorithms and theory; computer systems (especially cloud computing, HPC, and mobile computing); data science, probability, and statistics; and software engineering and software quality assurance.
