IS Grad Focuses on AI Security during Dean's Spotlight Lecture

February 21, 2023

SCI alumna Nathalie Baracaldo, PhD (SCI '16G) shared her artificial intelligence expertise during "Can We Make AI Foundation Models Secure, Private and Trustworthy?", the third presentation of this year's Dean's Spotlight lecture series, on Wednesday, February 15.

Speaking to about 45 in-person and 15 online guests at SCI's recently opened 130 N. Bellefield Avenue location, Dr. Baracaldo focused on how, when considering foundation models requiring new methodologies, existing techniques to provide artificial intelligence (AI) trustworthiness can work or fall short. She also concentrated on how recent research on privacy preserving federated learning can sometimes be at odds with the foundation model paradigm.

This particular talk in the lecture series was presented by SCI's Department of Informatics and Networked Systems (DINS)

"DINS would like to thank Dean Childers and the School for featuring one of our alumni at this event. Dr. Nathalie Baracaldo is a tremendous success in her field and we're very proud of her many accomplishments," said Daqing He (chair, DINS). "It was so interesting to learn about her work in improving the security of large machine learning models. It was so timely, given the surging interest in challenges we now face given the growth of artificial intelligence. It was truly a pleasure to see so many of our alumni, colleagues, and students all engaged in learning more about this topic," He said about the successful event.

The final talk in the Dean's Spotlight series, presented by the Intelligent Systems Program, is scheduled for March 28, 2023.
