Rakan Alseghayer Receives Awards at IEEE MDM 2021 Conference

SCI PhD student Rakan Alseghayer received the Diversity and Inclusion Award and the People's Choice of Best Pitch Video Award at the 22nd IEEE International Conference on Mobile Data Management (MDM 2021) for his work entitled "Racoon: Rapid Contact Tracing of Moving Objects Using Smart Indexes."

Rakan is a PhD student in Computer Science, working in the Advanced Data Management Technologies Laboratory (ADMT Lab) at the University of Pittsburgh with Dr. Panos K. Chrysanthis and Dr. Constantinos Costa. Prof. Chrysanthis is the founder and director of the ADMT lab, established in 1996.

Rakan received the Diversity and Inclusion Award for an overall inclusive presentation, which is gender-neutral (in narrative and in figures), avoids exclusionary examples, illustrates color blind inclusive graphs (with patterns and not only colors), is organized in easily readable slides and figures and achieves clarity of embedded video/animations. He also received the People's Choice of Best Pitch Video Award as a result of a popular vote among all conference participants.
