Paul Cohen

Dr. Paul Cohen is a professor of Computer Science at the School of Computing and Information. From 2017 - 2020, Cohen was Founding Dean of SCI. Prior to becoming the Dean, Dr. Cohen was the Program Manager at the Information Innovation Office at DARPA.

He joined DARPA from the University of Arizona, where he was a professor and founding director of the university’s School of Information: Science, Technology and Arts. He also served as the head of the university’s department of computer science.

Prior to joining the University of Arizona, Dr. Cohen worked at the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute. At that institution, he served as director of the Center for Research on Unexpected Events and deputy director of the Intelligent Systems Division. He began his career as professor of computer science at the University of Massachusetts.

Dr. Cohen has published nearly 200 peer-reviewed articles and is the author of Empirical Methods for Artificial Intelligence (MIT Press, 1995). He is co-author of five books and has contributed chapters to another 20 books. He is an elected Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.

Dr. Cohen holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Computer Science and Psychology from Stanford University, a Master of Science degree in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of California, San Diego.
