Ryan Shi Receives Awards for Research Combating Food Waste and Insecurity in Pittsburgh

In Pittsburgh, 1 in 5 residents experience food insecurity, and up to 40 percent of food that is produced goes to waste. Food waste and insecurity negatively harm communities and the environment, and SCI faculty member Dr. Ryan Shi, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science (CS), is reducing these harmful effects with his research project, “AI-based Volunteer Engagement for Crowdsourcing.”

Xiaowei Jia Discusses Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning in Dean’s Spotlight Series 2024

Xiaowei Jia, an assistant professor in SCI’s Department of Computer Science, explored knowledge-guided machine learning at the fourth and final lecture of the Dean’s Spotlight Series 2024 on April 25.
Jia presented his research on knowledge-guided machine learning and its real-world applications, with his research interests lying in artificial intelligence (AI), data mining and data science, and machine learning.

SCI Projects Awarded 2023-24 Pitt Momentum Funds

This year, three projects by faculty members at the School of Computing and Information (SCI) have received Momentum Funds from the University of Pittsburgh Office of Research! The Momentum Funds consist of three tiers of grants designed to support projects focused on scholarship, multidisciplinary work, and research by Pitt faculty. Dr. Xiaowei Jia (assistant professor, Department of Computer Science) received an Early Career Investigator Grant from NASA's Earth Science Division for his project “Towards Generalizable, Fair, and Knowledge Guided Machine Learning for Monitoring Earth Systems.” The grant was issued for $300,000, with the project estimated to last three years.
